SPL Community

Bynum Makes Grand ImpressionThe SPL presented by Nike unveiled its plan to host two Kids Clinics. The first will occur at the Long Beach State Pyramid on Sunday, July 8, 2007 and the second will take place on Tuesday, July 17, 2007 at Nike's The Point in Hollywood. Both clinics will begin at 10 am. Kids between the ages of 10-14 will be followed by the 15-18 year olds beginning at 1 pm. Kids will be taught everything from basic drills to the importance of conditioning, teamwork, good sportsmanship, education, and being active in the community. Nike and the SPL will team up to provide over 200 youths a valuable learning experience. Also, kids will have a chance to try on a variety of Nike shoes at a shoe trial station, including Kobe's new Zoom II. At the conclusion of the event, kids will have an opportunity to participate in an exclusive SPL free-throw contest with great Nike prizes!

The SPL plans to continue its involvement in the community with several presentations that will occur throughout the league. These presentations will recognize both the students who have performed well in the classroom, as well as the teachers who have been the most inspirational and creative throughout the greater Los Angeles area.

*EVENT ALERT*
NIKE REUSE-A-SHOE RECYCLING DRIVE
MAY 9 -30, 2007

What: As part of May's national Reuse-A-Shoe month, NIKETOWNS in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Chicago, New York and San Francisco are partnering with their local communities in a drive to recycle as many worn-out tennis shoes as possible. These shoes are used to create Nike Grind, a product resulting from the re-purposed elements of the shoes.

After Nike Grind is produced, it's mixed with other components to create running tracks, basketball courts, playgrounds and soccer fields. It's here that the loop closes on the product life cycle: what started as a beat-up shoe bound for the landfill has now contributed to a high-quality surface that's safer for kids and ideal for athletes.

Los Angeles has benefited from twelve NIKE Grind surfaces to date providing facilities for basketball, tennis, soccer and a children's playground, including Green Meadows Park, officially opened by Los Angeles Laker Kobe Bryant in March 2006.

NIKETOWN Los Angeles is inviting the local community to support its drive to collect as many shoes as possible and help contribute to improving sporting facilities through the installation of additional NIKE Grind surfaces in LA.

About Reuse-A-Shoe
It used to be, worn-out athletic shoes had nowhere to go but landfill. But for the last 13 years, Nike has been breathing new life into them through a remarkable program called Nike Reuse-A-Shoe.

The program collects old athletic shoes at key retail locations across the US. Additionally Nike has teamed up with the National Recycling Coalition to establish shoe collections in communities around the U.S. This revolutionary program has made it easy for people to recycle any brand of worn-out athletic shoes. Since the creation of Reuse-A-Shoe, we've processed over 19 million pairs of shoes and turned them into something new: high-quality sport surfaces where athletes of all ages can play.

It's all part of Nike's long-term commitment to conserving natural resources and improving lives through sport.
